Tragedy for Games Legends
You might have noted that two people were tragically killed in a car accident involving a police pursuit in Christchurch yesterday. The two killed are Norman Fitt and Deidre Jordan both regular Masters Games participants. They were registered for this year’s Games and had apparently been ...training when the fatal crash occurred.
Both were amazingly fit and competed at a high level, winning many medals in Aerobics, Indoor Triathlon, Indoor Rowing, Duathlon and running events. They also took a very active part in most social functions and were a beautiful, smiling couple on the dance floor.
It is a sad loss for the Masters Games family and we will miss their enthusiasm, energy and athleticism. They were an inspiration for other competitors and were a shining example of the benefits of life long exercise.
Our thoughts go out to their family and friends, Chris Thomas, Games Manager

An Introduction to the Games
The South Island Masters Games is an annual festival of sport which is held each year alternating between Timaru in 2010 and a new venue Nelson in 2011.
Running for a week it is a chance for veteran athletes at all levels and abilities to compete in more than 50 different sporting codes.
Most sports have both competitive and social grades so you don't have to be a top performer or even a current competitor to enter. There are no qualification criteria -. athletes don’t need to be nominated or to represent a club – they represent themselves.
Athletes can be an absolute beginner lining up against an ex-All Black or a novice against a world record holder!Anyone can enter – as long as they are old enough. Most sports take entries from age 30 or 35 and upwards. All people with disabilities are encouraged to enter events at the games where applicable and event organiser will endeavour to cater to your needs.
And just because the emphasis is on participation, doesn’t mean it‘s a social event. (Although the social programme at the SIMG is legendary!)
The Games attract serious masters athletes including national and international representatives striving to achieve personal bests and to break New Zealand and World Records. The last time the games were held, 3 masters age group world records were broken!
Previous Games have been huge successes providing multi-million dollars of ongoing economic and community benefits for the city with wide support from locals and bringing in visitors from all over the South Island, with a handful of North Islanders and overseas competitors.
We have a few people who want to play social mixed volleyball but don't have enough numbers to make up a team. If you're keen on joining in a team let us know (we are especially looking for women players). Volleyball is on Saturday 9th October and it's a heap of fun. Phone Dallas 021 217 8334 or the Games HQ 03 688 5531.
